Here in Oz I'm using hoop pine - an Australian native timber that's popular with boatbuilders. It's been used in aircraft since at least WW2. About 10% heavier than spruce but also 15% stronger. And about an order of magnitude cheaper since it's locally grown whereas spruce has to be imported.
