To solve this, one has to edit /usr/share/applications/kcmgtk-xdg.desktop and

I have the same problem. Every time I install Ubunu on my computer I have to
add the monitor parameters in /etc/X11/xorg.conf at the "Monitor" section:
HorizSync = 30-70; VertRefresh = 50-160. These are the parameters for my
monitor Samsung SyncMaster 793MB. After x restart I am able to select [

Found some info:
If I load grub's console on boot, I can access (hd0,4)/grub/splashimages/FILE
I thought this was the problem, an incorrect path to the file, but after
changing it and rebooted there's still no grub splashimage.
I think this is a bug between grub and LVM.

Well on my computer sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart works fine. Rebooting or
shutting down also works fine from the login menu. It only freezes if I try
rebooting or shutting down from within the kde session.
