I did as you asked.
Removed gtk2-engines-gtk-qt remove only under
synaptic. Solved my problem with volume and also my
problem with open office in gnome. Bug {40703}.
Oddly enough it said it will remove Kubuntu desktop.
However kde still works and openoffice under kde still
works fine. Thanks
Yuriy: The .desktop files for GTK and other non-KDE apps have to be patched to
work with the system:/ kio. I've noticed that the most recent OpenOffice
packages have been patched for this, it's just a matter of getting the other
major non-KDE packages to patch it as well.

There seems to be a patch in the kde bugs forum against this bug.
Is it possible for the kubuntu admins to prepare an upgrade which embeds this
patch? This bug seems to me quite severe.

Yes, I tried several distros. It works fine with Mandriva, Knopix (live CD)
and even with a Debian. I only have this problem with Ubuntu/Kubuntu so I
think it's not a hardware issue.

Looks like it has been fixed for openoffice and kaffeine, and the home link now
redirects to /home/username/
It's kind of a dirty workaround IMO (well, only if you want to use system:/ in
the first place, otherwise I think it's good to go to the real home directory),

I think, AFAIR, it could be reproduced with emptying corresponding part in
/etc/network/interfaces.
AFAIR, I had the crash, then I went to /etc/network/interfaces to configure and
then I get no crash.

I've observed that the problem is that adept_notifier needs root
permissions to get the updates. If you run it with sudo it works as
expected. If you run it as user, when trying to count the updates it
gets an error code 1, and this is the reason it always reports 1
updateable package.
