KDE (until actual 4.1.4) doesn't play the whole startup sound, it cuts it after
2 seconds or so.
This problem is not Kubuntu-specific, but could be easily fixed within ubuntu.
A patch is available upstream.

Hi,
I don't think this is a gnome bug.
Gnome doesn't force any application to quit, it just sends a "TERM"
signal (kill $PID), which is a nice kill.
After 5 seconds if an application is still running, it displays a window
: "following applications are still running", with 3 choices, "quit
anyway
Thanks for keeping us in the loop on this. The upstream bug is marked as
fixed a while ago. It certainly doesn't crash on my system with KDE
4.2rc1 packages installed. Closing as fix released

The original feed was fixed the day after I reported the bug here. But
the problem still reproduces on my machine, if I take the XML from above
and copy it into a file. Then I press "Insert" in akregator and write
file:///home/ksm/test.rss as the URL. Selecting OK, will crash
akregator.
