As I understand it, Knetworkmanager sends a signal to the NM daemon to
connect. The NM daemon sends back status messages, and Knetworkmanager
updates the icon to reflect these.
What seems to be happening, is nm-applet sends the message to connect,

Yes, to clarify on this, when i first switched to Alexander's PPA with
NM 0.7, Knetworkmanager worked a treat. Same with the packages in
Intrepid when 0.7 was brought in. But then the most recent update to
Knetworkmanager killed it.
