If you wanted to antagonise your upstream, congratulations, you've
succeeded. Needless to say that this kind of hostile attitude, from an
Ubuntu.com employee no less, is very unwelcome and in my personal
opinion totally unwarranted.
Due to obvious personal reasons, I will no longer be triaging
So, hate to rain on your parade, but as I wrote yesterday, the problem
doesn't occur with upstream (building manually) 3.0.17.4. So there are
ostensibly no patches to backport from upstream 3.0.18-rc2. This is
probably an issue in the Debian packaging or at least that is triggered
by Debian
I can reproduce the problem with Debian Sid, but not with a custom build
of upstream release of the same baseline version 3.0.17.4.

I would open a new bug and a comment referencing this one. The root

VLC currently uses the Qt4 API for systray.
There are roughly three paths to addressing your request:
1/ libQt4Gui takes care of it. As VLC upstream, that would have my
preference (then I have no extra work to do). But the Qt4 people might
think quite differently.
2/ The indicator application

KIO is using atexit() (which is pretty much always a stupid thing to

VLC does not use KIO at all. Another library is causing this, most
certainly Qt4 or a Qt4 theme engine.

putenv() makes Xlib hide the ARGB visual. So libQt4 does not see the
ARGB visual, hence falls back to RGB regardless of Cairo-Dock. This is a
huge hack and not even thread-safe :-( though.

VLC crashes if cairo-dock is installed in karmic alpha 4

Qt4-X11 is using ARGB visuals, which seems like a logical thing to do if
Cairo-Dock is running. VLC Xvideo and X11 plugins fail to handle this
correctly when creating their rendering window. Thus, this is
essentially a LibVLC bug.
A trivial work-around is here:
For whatever reason, when Cairo-Dock is started Qt4-X11 starts using the
ARGB X11 visual, instead of normal RGB. I don't know why, but I assume
it's the intended behaviour. Indeed, all Qt4 widgets work fine that way.
VLC breaks because it tries to use a VLC Qt4 plugin video widget
directly
