"Yes this looks like a nouveau kernel driver bug. I recommend using the
proprietary Nvidia driver instead, but it seems your GPU only supports
driver

in exploring the issue as I wrote the initial report.. I opened
Desktop.Settings (right click background with aim of selecting another
wallpaper)
I'm now getting lots of black flashes on the box... which look like
graphics issues with the nvidia card.. (nouveau related?) I'd
