I have a similar problem. I can not burn cds. It says I do not have write
permission with cdrecord.

(partial) solution:
in
/usr/share/applnk/Settings/System/k3bsetup2.desktop
change the line
NoDisplay=True
to
NoDisplay=False
Now i can see k3bsetup.
i can use it to set the cdrecord group to "cdrom".
(files
/usr/bin/cdrecord.mmap and /usr/bin/X11/cdre

K3B is working fine for me, but I do not have SUID bit set.
Is it possible that you do not have right permissions on your device file
and/or your user is not in the right group (cdrom)?
Permissions from my system:
brw-rw 1 root cdrom 3, 64 2006-05
