The same happens for me on ubuntu 10.10 with the desktop effects disabled.

Hmmm... maybe the recent patch is unrelated. Sandy Bridge is not used
in the W500.

I have this problem with my Fujitsu Lifebook S760 running Kubuntu 10.10.
I tried Puke's fix of disabling kde desktop effects, and it reduced the
frequency of the problem but did not fix it.
