Both host and guest are running an 2.6.32.x amd64 kernel, qemu is 0.14.1. The
system is currently not in production and can be used for experiments.

opens a new can of worms and should
only be used to diagnose the problem. You probably should also backup the
save file and use the -snapshot option to be able to repeatly test different
strategies.

changing from the CoW-qcow2 to the
master-qcow2 file fixed the problem, but this isn't satisfactory, since we
would like to use the CoW-functionality. Not using VirtIO also fixed the
problem, but has performance penalties.
Any help or comment is appreciated.
