Demonstration of Solidarity with the People of Venezuela on Election Day (October 7) Join to the Bolivarian Circle NYC this coming Sunday Lost in the spectacle of the U.S Presidential season is the fact that the most important Presidential election of 2012 may be taking place not in US soil, but way 'South of the Border' in Venezuela. The Venezuelan Presidential Election of October 7 matter to all of us for a variety of reasons, chiefly among them is the role Venezuela--and its leadership--could play in the geopolitics of the Southern Hemisphere or Global South. As someone put it recently in The Guardian, "The election on 7 October is not only a Venezuelan affair. Its importance goes beyond the country's boundaries. Its result matters to the entire continent, to the Non-Aligned Movement and to popular movements throughout the world. A Chávez victory will deepen a post-neoliberal, socialist model of development for the country. However, were the opposition to triumph, it would be a tough blow to those countries that seek to leave the Washington consensus behind or to create a new world order, beyond US hegemony." Given the high stakes involved in the Venezuelan elections, and also given the recent trends of electoral fraud and attacks against democratic movements in the region (Honduras 2009, Ecuador 2010, Colombia 2010, Paraguay 2012, Mexico 2006 and 2012 or in the case of Cuba the inhuman economic blockade among many other forms of political destabilization in our americas ), it is important that we stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela as they go to the polls and decide the fate of their country's future. To that end, on Venezuelan Election Day (Sunday, October 7th) we are holding a peaceful Vigil right across from the Venezuelan Consulate in New York City, located at 7 East 51st Street, 10022. The Vigil will be ongoing throughout the day to coincide with the voting process in Venezuela. We'll be gathering early in the afternoon. We hope to see you there!
