1989. The CIA and American forces are determined to capture ruthless

Panamanian strong man Manuel Noriega. No longer run by the CIA, he has
charted his

own path to near-absolute power in his country, and the price of his refusal
to obey his

handlers is an American invasion. Accused of murder, drug trafficking and
corruption, he

has sought sanctuary with Vatican emissary Archbishop Jose Sebastian Laboa.
But the

Archbishop has his own agenda to follow, separate from Noriega's, and the
struggle

between these two men is the story of Donald Freed's play "The Devils
Advocate," based

on true events.

Robert Beltran portrays Noriega. No stranger to audiences of Latino Theater

Company and Los Angeles Theatre Center, he most recently appeared there in
its

acclaimed production of "Solitude." But he's famed for his film work
(especially features

directed by the late Paul Bartel) and for his television roles as Jerry
Flute on HBO's "Big

Love" and as fan favorite Chakotay on "Star Trek: Voyager."

Tom Fitzpatrick plays Laboa. He's appeared in 18 films, a dozen television

episodes, and in multiple productions at the Evidence Room.

Jose Luis Valenzuela directs. The longtime artistic director of Latino
Theater

Company as well as of Los Angeles Theatre Center, he most recently oversaw
the

LATC's Ovation-nominated season of excellence, during which he directed
"Dementia"

and "La Victima." He is also a Professor at UCLA.

The prolific playwright Donald Freed is, in the words of the late Studs
Terkel,

"the most political and pertinent of all American playwrights." The late
Harold Pinter

called him "a writer of blazing imagination, courage and insight. His work
is a unique

and fearless marriage of politics and art." Freed was nominated for an
Ovation Award

this past season for his most recent play "1951-2006."

The play received multiple productions in Britain and was workshopped in

Burbank. The new production marks its U.S. Premiere as a fully realized main
stage

production.

event:

A large stage revival of my PEN Drama Prize - Winning play,

A Great Public Theatre, the Los Angeles Theatre Center: the LATC's renowned
Artistic Director, Jose Luis Valenzuela, directing the play; the national
treasure, actor Robert Beltran as the tyrant, General Manuel Noriega; and
the brilliant Thomas Fitzpatrick as the Grand Inquisitor, Archbishop La Boa:

These are the elements that have brought me into Residence at the LATC.

The play opens April 1 and plays Thursdays through Sundays, closing April
17. I will be at all Friday and Sunday matinee performances. For ticket
information, please telephone 866 - 811 - 4111, and/or go to the Los Angeles
