If you plan on attending, do try to be there by 12:30PM. We hope to see you or a representative of your organization there. SCIC For Immediate Release PressConference WHO: National Lawyers Guild, the Southern CaliforniaImmigration Coalition, IDEPSCA and other community organizations WHAT: Press conference announcing our campaign to end thepractice of vehicle impounds for unlicensed undocumented immigrants duringcheckpoints and during regular traffic stops. WHEN: Thursday, 29 September 2011, 1PM LOCATION: In front of Los Angeles City Hall, 200 N. MainStreet (Main Street Entrance) Citiesand counties throughout the state are confiscating thousands of cars amonth at drivers license checkpoints and during random traffic stops. Mostdrivers are often the victims of racial profiling. Thetowing and impound business is quite lucrative for tow companies, the city andthe county. The average victim of an impound cannot pay the estimated$2,000 in towing fees, storage fees and the citation. Those unable to paythese charges lose their vehicles completely as they are sold at auction justdays after the 30-day impound period. Wetherefore demand that Mayor Villaraigosa use the power of his office to stopimpounding cars for 30 days at traffic stops for minor traffic and equipmentviolations, and institute a policy similar to the City of Oakland or SanFrancisco, which allow unlicensed drivers to safely park their cars or call alicensed driver to pick up the car. Currently, LAPD has instituted apolicy to stop impounding cars for 30 days at DUI/Drivers Licensecheckpoints. That policy does not affect people who lose their cars attraffic stops. The community has been asking Mayor Villaraigosa for months toto take leadership and address this problem. It is our intention to march tothe mayor’s office to submit our petition and request a direct meeting with himto further discuss this campaign. Speakersat the press conference will include representatives of the National LawyersGuild, the Southern California Immigration Coalition, IDEPSCA, other communityorganizers and impound victims. The pressconference will be in Spanish and English. For more information call Cynthia Anderson-Barker, NLG,310-963-0924; Colleen Flynn, NLG, 818-613-5221; or Martin Terrones, SCIC, (310)431-9229.
