Hi. I'm not registered as a Democrat but most on the this list are, and
my own realpolitik understands that progressive Dems are critical in
maintaining what democracy is left, in defeating the oppressors and
in governing what comes afterward. So, I feel very good about asking
a trusted Dem friend for these choices. I also know that almost all
Greens and P&F folks on this list already know for whom they're voting,
but if I felt pal Donna Warren was in trouble, I'd be working the phones.
What the hell, let me include a few Dems I've worked and am friends with,
and have great trust in. Debra Bowen, Karen Bass, Judy Chu (though I
haven't seen her in years,) Gil Cedillo (same caveat) Mark Ridley Thomas,
Elena Popp and Warren Furutani (same). Couldn't be without them.
I detest Jerry Brown, but the alternative is probably worse. Ugh!

*LACER is the acronym of the afterschool program I mentioned yesterday
in my tribute to Joe Hacker. Lancer is a missile or something. Also ugh!

Subject: Recommendations for Dem. Party Primary

The following recommendations are a combination of ADA and Stonewall and me.
Where ADA and Stonewall didn't agree, I decided.

BTW, I was on the Stonewall interview panel for Secretary of State, and I
cannot say enough good things about Debra Bowen. She's SO prepared for this
office. Totally understands electronic voting software (took a course at
MIT) and likes to say she's running for two reasons: Florida in 2000 and
Ohio in 2004.

Here are the recommendations:

Governor -- Phil Angelides

Lt Governor -- John Garamendi

Secretary of State -- Debra Bowen, Debra Bowen, Debra Bowen

Controller -- John Chiang

Attorney General -- Jerry Brown

Insurance Commissioner -- Cruz Bustamante, I guess

Board of Equalization -- Judy Chu

U S Senator -- I'm tempted to vote for Colleen Fernald, as a
protest against Feinstein who of course will win

U S Congress --

29 BOB McCLOSKEY
30 Henry Waxman
31 Xavier Becerra
32 Hilda Solis
33 Diane Watson
34 Lucille Roybal-Allard

50 FRANCINE BUSBY

State Senator --

22 Gil Cedillo
24 Gloria Romero
26 Mark Ridley-Thomas
28 Jenny Oropeza
30 Ron Calderon
32 Gloria Negrete-McLeod

State Assembly --

38 Lyn Shaw
39 Richard Alarcon
40 Lloyd Levine
41 Julia Brownley or Kelly Hayes-Raitt
42 Abbe Land
43 Paul Krekorian
44 Anthony Portantino
45 Elena Popp
47 Karen Bass
48 Mike Eng
51 Mervyn Dymally
52 Ted Lieu
53 Betty Karnette

Dem Pty of the SFV, and a couple of liberal judge friends)

8 -- Alan Friedenthal

18 -- John Gutierrez

28 -- Judith Meyer

95 -- Richard Kraft

102 -- none of my organizations or judges could make an
endorsement in this race.

120 -- Dzintra Janavs -- According to both my judges and Jan
Goodman as well, she was targeted by her opponent because her
opponent thought it would be easy to defeat someone with such a
funny-sounding ethnic name.

122 -- Daniel Lowenthal

144 -- Janis Levart Barquist

Supt of Public Instruction -- Jack O'Connell

County Assessor -- Rick Auerbach

Sheriff -- Lee Baca

State Measures:

81 -- YES

82 -- YES

Subject: So. Cal. Library: Spying on Americans Discussion and Q&A

Dear Friend, not only has the government been secretly intercepting email
and phone communications by people in the U.S. without warrants but now it
has come to light that they are also collecting the phone call records of
tens of millions of Americans as part of a "data mining" effort. Where will
it end? Join the Southern California Library and Bill Goodman of the Center
for Constitutional Rights on Saturday, June 3, 2 p.m. for a discussion on
the government's secret program to spy on Americans. Please scroll for more
information.

If we are not willing to stop the increasing surveillance, it is unlikely
that the government will limit itself. Please join us on June 3.

the National Security Agency (NSA) to intercept email and telephone
communications by people in the U.S.-without a court-issued warrant. Join us

Center for Constitutional Rights' lawsuit, filed in January 2006, to stop
it.

Sunday, June 4th - Santa Barbara

Dahr Jamail writes for the Inter Press Service,
The Asia Times, Truthut.org and many other
outlets. His reports have been published in The
Nation, The Sunday Herald, Islam Online, the
Guardian and the Independent, and his dispatches
have been translated into ten languages. Dahr
also reports for Democracy Now!, the BBC, and
numerous other radio stations around the globe

spent eight months as one of the few independent
U.S. journalists in occupied Iraq.

Mark Manning is an independent documentary
filmmaker working on a series of films about
Iraq. In 2005, Manning became the only western
unembedded civilian to enter the city of Falluja
just after the siege. He lived with refugees
there and experienced the war from their
perspective. His current production, "The Road to
Falluja," is a groundbreaking project documenting
the post-9/11 environment that led to a war. The
film conveys the common humanity between two
cultures at war and presents a real path to
peace. Visit conceptionmedia.net to learn more.

7:00pm Panel discussing
Peace in Iraq . . . How do we get there? What can we do?
Journalists Dahr Jamail, Mark Manning, and Aaron Glantz along
with activist Muna Coobtee present their views on Iraq.

(see above bios for Dahr and Mark)

Aaron Glantz entered Iraq during the early days
of the war as the population's temperament was
changing from from one of gratitude to Americans
for ousting the dictator who had oppressed them
to one of tension and resentment over broken
promises, disrespect, continuing destruction and
unprovoked violence toward Iraqi civilians. As an
independent journalist, Glantz went beyond the
safety of the heavily protected Green Zone to
get at the truth of life in Iraq under the
American occupation. In his book, "How American
Lost Iraq," we are given the voices of Iraqis
themselves. What they have to tell us, in Aaron
Glantz's moving and courageous book, is a truth
that all Americans need to hear.

Muna Coobtee is a Palestinian activist from Los
Angeles, CA. She is a member of the Free
Palestine Alliance and serves as its
representative on the Los Angeles steering
committee of the International A.N.S.W.E.R.
Coalition. The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition organized
the largest mass demonstrations against the war
and occupation of Iraq. Muna is also a founding
member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation
and a contributor to "Socialism and Liberation" magazine.
