Labs can still create JIRAs and receive patches from community
members, right ? Then I think you can treat the student as a community
member. I guess the only difference is that, the student could
probably earn committer karma in a regular project, but won't in a lab
project.

is it - despite the fact that only committers can directly work on a lab
- possible for a labling to participate in GSoC?
