In my zeal to promote lacemaking, I admit that I did not address the question of whether you can pick up and put down bobbin lace with this questioner. I do agree that it is not the easiest thing to pick up and put down. In fact, one of the things I like about it is the intense concentration that you often feel when you are tackling a difficult pattern, a sort of neurological buzz that you get when you are "in the zone". Readers of the IOLI Bulletin may recall my article about my struggle with lacemaking addiction in which I make lace to excess, neglecting important tasks. I confess that I seem to be in one of those states now, especially as the weather is in the single digits. I find I am starting my morning with a little lacemaking "eye opener" which often extends into the afternoon. I am now shooting through recorded books as though there is no tomorrow. In normal times, I often don't even start because I know I can't stop. So, perhaps it was wrong of me to encourage a young mother to take it up, or rather not to discourage her. Devon
