I needed to make a bunch of large pillows for a workshop just a few months
ago. I went to a local store that sells hot tubs. Every hot tub is shipped
with a Styrofoam cover on top. I was able to get the foam for free because it
was just destined for the dump. If you choose this route, be aware
I really like that idea! I never would have thought of it. My mom used to use
strong thread to cut cheese, especially Velveeta.

Second reply - I meant to include that when I have finished cutting my
pillows, there is a strip of foam left over. I have used these pieces to
make several block pillows.
Try not to waste anything and only the shavings go into the garbage/land

The foam cutter I found at Hobby Lobby isn't a hot wire cutter. It is a very
fine blade. I think someone else likened it to a cheese cutter, which is a

I have purchased the foam pillows at the last two conventions then cut them
down so I could hand carry the section with the lace, pricking and bobbins.
Last month, I used a straight edge to score the foam and then used a
serrated knife to cut the foam. Â It fit perfectly into my block pillow at

Hi Susan,
I have made many square pillows from construction foam. I use a bread knife
and cut very slowly, making several shallow cuts the length of my finished
product. The foam I have is black, so I mark it with a silver-colored
marking pen. It will wash right off the knife, especially if you
I have made lots of pillows using the pink, blue or green insulation foam from
the builders merchants you mention, Susan. I use a knife with retractable
blade that I get from $ store that has the segmented blade that can be broken
off when it gets dull.

Thank you all for your suggestions! We are meeting next Sat. to plan our
program & materials so this is great info. I was hoping that power tools
weren't required! Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA

Hello everyone
A serrated knife was recommended to me for cutting builders' board/hard
foam, so that's what I used to cut inexpensive pillows. Draw guidelines
then 'saw' carefully through the lines in deliberate movements. Use a
piece of the foam as a self-magnet to pick up the bits. You can
know for sure.

I have just made a foam pillow, so here are some suggestions:
