I have an original postcard photograph of this picture. As well as the
Bedfordshire cuffs and headpiece she is wearing a lacy shawl - could be
knitted.

oh wow, I have just investigate, thank you for taking the trouble to post
this, Sue - the portrait, even in the clipping, is excellent, though yes her
visage seems overwhelmed by the lace.

nurse 55+ years ago, we were taught to emulate Florence Nightingale. All
patient records were printed at that time, so "probie" students had to

I saw her being spoken about after her return from the war and they
mentioned how she hated the celebrity status she was given and went off to
live with family keeping out of sight a lot when photos were taken and being
there in amongst some of the family ones.

In Sunday's "
In Sunday's "Express" there was a really good article about Florence
Nightingale who was a British nurse in the Crimean war. Born in 1820 to
rich parents she defied them and trained as a nurse and went to the Crimean.
