When I first started making lace (early 1980"s), these bobbins were the first ones that I bought in any quantity. I'd order several dozen pairs ($2.50 per dozen in those days) and we'd share them out among our little group. I found them very good, but they are a bit big and when I started needing more bobbins on my pillow, I wrote to Mr. LeGrande and asked if he could make me some smaller ones. The first ones he made were 6 pairs in Lignum Vitae and they were sort of like honiton bobbins, but not with a single head. They were pointed at the bottom and not drilled. It took me hours to drill the hole using a pin vice with a tiny drill bit - I didn't know until after that Lignum vitae is one of the hardest woods! I then bought many more smaller bobbins from Mr. LeGrande and still have them on my pillow today. I keep the big ones for when I need a whole pile of thread - I used them when I made my curtain and was needing copious amounts of thread on the bobbins.

Malvary in Ottawa where it is quite cold today, but supposed to be up to +10c over the weekend, but down to -1 on Monday with _now flurries (can't bear to say the 's' word quite yet).
