Diane,

I know just how you feel about getting your son started on BL. I was
thrilled when my daughter (5 1/2) wanted to learn, and this past
Saturday she had 3 sessions on her bookmark, and learnt half and double
half stitch. She's excited to use her own bobbins - Grandma Liz has been
sending her a pair for each birthday :-) My son, who's 8, has decided he
wants to learn (fine with me :-) ) so will teach him once his little
sister's project is finished and I have finished the project I want to
make for one of her teachers.

Which leads me into a question for the general masses out there: when
teaching the basing 3 stitches (half/CT;whole/cloth/CTC; double
half/CTCT), which is the easier route to go, when it comes to teaching
half and double half? Ie which one is easier to learn first? I started
Katie on whole stitch, which she mastered OK, and then I had trouble
deciding which one to do next, so settled on half st. She finally
mastered it (who hasn't had trouble keeping half stitch straight at some
point in their lacemaking lives?!), and then I went back to whole for
revision and to provide a break between the 2 new stitches, so she could
see the differences, and double half seemed to be mastered faster.

I was wondering if any of you boffins out there had any thoughts or
experiences with this?

Cheers,
Helen, Aussie living in gloriously warm Denver
