Not a bad idea at all, since I also need whatever I use to be transportable. I'll see what I can find in the way of a box. Might also be able to attach
the box right behind the work, but on top of the pillow.

One problem is that I tend to shove the work to one side or the other,
depending on which way I'm going (this is a plaited lace and I work straight sideways at times) -- so that is another challenge in terms of storing the
lace as I work.

The less unyielding the "collector", the better, I think. So... A home-made "sausage" is a good solution. Sew a hemmed tube, stuff firmly, leaving ca 1" unstuffed at each end. Tie, tightly, close to the stuffing. The whole will look a bit like an individually wrapped piece of candy. Pin through the unstuffed ends. Not only is a "sausage" easier to move arouns/repin but, not being rigid, it's also less likely to distort the lace.

A nice alternative to a box would be a drawstring pouch, though the "collection" is less tidy than on a "sausage" (no different than a box, though). Leave open while working, pull shut and pin to the pillow when transporting. Or, in a pinch, a ziplock bag would do the job as well as a pouch...
