Of course the problems with copying have mainly come about because of three
factors that I can think of. There are probably more.
1. The ease with which we can now copy - photocopiers and scanners. Before I
got a scanner, I always had to explain to the lady in the copyshop that I
was allowed to copy a pricking from a book because it would destroy the book
if I made holes through the page into pricking card. Before photocopiers it
was a laborious copy by hand.
2. The ease with which we can now pass copies on - snail mail in the fairly
recent past, email and downloads now. Then there's the ease of selling by
methods such as ebay and other on-line auctions.
3. Us "plebs" can now afford not only to buy the materials to produce an
object, but also have the leisure time, having spent a realtively short time
working to earn the money to buy them (unless you're like me and receive a
pension so stay at home:-D ). Apart from those making a few pennies making
lace, doing embroidery, etc. for a living and working very long hours, only
the wives and daughters of the wealthy had the time or the money, and were
expected to do these 'ladylike' things.
I don't know when the copyright laws covering what we're talking about were
made, but, when they were, they wouldn't have seemed as strict as they do
now - the advance in standards of living for most and in technology wouldn't
have been envisaged.
