I've just done a 2 day workshop on wire lace with Lenka Suchanek who is touring
Australia with her husband at the moment. The workshop was organized by the
Victorian Branch of the Australian Lace Guild (I won't mention the yummy
food...). We learnt to make (and I'm wearing it today!!) a copper-wire
Renaissance lace bracelet and went on to make an earring in 2 parts (didn't
finish the second part, but I'll work on it in the evenings). Some fast workers
finished the earring, and I presume they will now make another one at home...I
was so surprised to see how beautiful my plaits look in copper wire, they're
usually pretty ghastly in thread! I also enjoyed the "no sewings, ladies, it
would weaken the wire". Brilliant!

We all had a ball. Lenka is a wonderful teacher, and such a lovely lady too.
I've been very keen on trying wire lace since the first time someone on Lace
mentioned her angel, and her studio website, and I am super-happy I was able to
do the workshop. I'd be even happier if I could have done the workshop Lenka is
giving at the Australian Lace Guild AGM at the end of this month, but after
taking 3 months leave in June-August, there was no way I could get another week
off to go there. What a shame, I would have so enjoyed another 2 or 4 days with
her.
Australian spiders, if you're booked into Lenka's class at the AGM, make sure
you get there, even with a broken leg :-), you'll really enjoy yourselves. And
bring lots of cash with you to buy her kits, you will want to continue
practising when you get home! The angel is just the thing for the Christmas
tree. I also bought a kit for a butterfly brooch, and treated myself to a
lovely round copper wire pendant made by Lenka, as a (not too belated) birthday
present. The money I spent on kits, bobbins and wire doesn't count, of
course...
Back to work. I'm just so thrilled about my weekend I coulndn't wait to tell
you all.

Bye for now,

Helene, the froggy from Melbourne.
