Now more commonly rigid and shaped like a tiara, but worn with the pints
down behind the ears.

Sounds likely - probably related in etymology to our "Jane Banks
ponytail", the family name for the gathering of the front hair into a
small ponytail at the crown of the head, above the rest of the hair
left loose - from the Disney Mary Poppins movie.
