I am getting these digests erratically, so apologies. Interesting, I bought the 1953 Better Homes and Gardens book for my mother for Christmas a year ago...it was one she didn't have, walked into an odd town and antique store and it was the only cookbook they had...I digress...
I have 4 generations of recipes from one side of the family, and also my father mentions from his side, that cloves were used alot, amongst those his favorite was a chocolate cake...though no one seems to have the recipe. I know that cloves are typically identified with sweet things, I would also include it in the category of a savory...how did the recipe turn out...since I have never seen a mistake in BHG cookbooks, and I adulterate all recipes trying to enhance them, I concur with the earlier comment about a nutty taste the cloves would lend, and think that with bay leaf, it would be quite intriguing.
