[lazarus] Non latin text manipulation

I have a database including text in both English and Greek. I have no problem dealing with English texts but, when reading data containing Greek, strange things happen. Strings seem to be corrupted or empty. I cannot use any string manipulation functions such as copy().   Is someone familiar with this kind of problems with non latin texts?   Regards, Panagiotis
