Hi,

Mike suggested I introduce myself a while back, but I've been sorta busy and
haven't got to it! Anyway, I'm not a true developer in that I don't have
the first clue about writing code. But I do like to mess about and break
things and usually learn from putting them back together.

My main interests relate to LEAF with wireless and LEAF with IPSec. And
combinations of same. I've been running several FreeS/WAN 1.5 tunnels with
the tried and true Eiger distro for a year and a half or so. Very solid. A
few months later I reworked Eiger to get a Breezecom FHSS card working as
the WAN interface connecting to an ISP. That got the ISP interested as they
then had the ability to compete with the Big Boys and their
router/firewall/masq solutions. I like seeing how this stuff has extended
the life of the small 'ma and pa' ISP!

Recently I've been interested in adding wireless into the mix on the LAN
side and have been working with Bering, as Shorewall seemed to be the
easiest way to mix and match multiple interfaces. One thing leads to
another and I now have single floppy images of Bering RC2 with wireless
support for Orinoco and Breezecom, including dhcpd, dnscache, sshd-1 (yeah,
I know, but it's small...). Both images are set up for wireless on the WAN
side. At some point I suppose I'll post them somewhere in case others want
to save a few minutes configuring.

I'm very interested in exploring wisp-dist next, have created the CF card
and just need the time to tinker.

Enough about all that... I have a question! Has anyone looked at patching
the FreeS/WAN package to support AES? From bits and pieces I've caught on
the FreeS/WAN list, it sounds like there is a patch available and that AES
is significantly easier on CPU horsepower. Given that many LEAF boxes are
escapees from the trash compactor queue, it seems to me a logical step to
add this support and thus bump the throughput capability of the tunnels.
Not a big issue for the WAN side, as upload speeds are typically 512kbps or
less on most DSL and Cable connections, but if someone wanted to encrypt his
LAN wireless transmissions, this would be important...

Thanks,
