I've added
export HISTFILE=/local/home/root/.ash_history
to the top of the /root/.profile file. /local is my small SSD, because I
like to keep the history, but not in the configdb. You can, of course, also
redirect it to something like /tmp.

That annoys me to. :-)
The root package includes the whole content of the /root directory to the
configdb.lrp file.
# more /var/lib/lrpkg/root.local
root
var/lib/random-seed
Would probably make sense to redirect this file to /tmp or somewhere else
where it isn't included in the configdb file.
