There was no mention of what svn revision of madwifi-ng you used, so I can
guess it may be that autocreate
(http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/autocreate) is having an impact on your
setup. The ifupdown scripts you use (madwifi-base) work well when there is
no autocreation, but have not received
