I seem to remember something about being able to access servers in a DMZ
(built using Charles' extended scripts) from the internal network but using
the external IP. Is my mind playing tricks here or is this really something
that can be done?

Oops, I'm not sure how exactly I did that but I sent my message
before I had a chance to complete it...
Like I was saying, the packets seems to be denied by that rule:
$IPCH -A forward -j DENY -p all -s 0/0 -d 0/0
