G'day Henry,

CIPE is a "proprietary" protocol and only talks to another CIPE box. It's however very simple to configure and get running. IPSec is a "standard" and allows interoperability between lots of different platforms, CISCO, MS etc.

From my own minimal experience as a complete novice I found getting ipsec to work too taxing on my brain <grin> whereas I managed to get CIPE up and running with 3 VPN tunnels with only a bit of hand holding from the CIPE list. My problems were mainly to do with ipchains (again due to my ignorance.)

Stability wise CIPE seems to be running OK, I have had it running here for over a week with no failures up till now.

Subject: [Leaf-user] CIPE vs. IPSEC ??

Can anyone describe or explain the key differences between CIPE and IPSEC?

I am wanting to establish a secure VPN tunnel between 2 LRP firewall/routers, over a wireless link.

I am interested in understanding potential differences in the following areas: robustness of security/encryption methods, system overhead/performance, stability of VPN link, ease of configuration/support, vulnerability to hacking, etc...

Anyone care to share their thoughts??

Thanks,

Henry
