I believe that what you are referring to is that it cannot see the LDAP (the reason for exchange) services, and consequently you cannot access the Exchange server.
Take a look at the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;278339 This discusses the ports used by the Exchange server for the various services. What I believe you will need to do is open the specific ports so that your workstation can access the Exchange server. Hope this is useful information.
