Graig: The rw parameter is needed for post 2.4.18 kernel whatever the boot media is (floppy, cd-rom, disk...). If you do not put it your initial fs is mounted Read-only and therefore you cannot create directories needed at the initial stage of the boot process. By the way my documentation
