This is quite strange. Apparently IDE module fails. One of the possible
reasons is that it wasn't recompiled...
Its hard for me to be of help, as I don't have any Slackware
installations handy.

Can you print out everything? In case of some part of build process
failing I would expect not to boot at all, not a general protection

full install of slackware 8.1 to eliminate the possibility of missing
utility but still getting the same touch error.

Then you need to play with build.sh and see where exactly it fails...
perhaps a certain utility is unavailable.
