Hello Ryan, I have just issued another pull request (https://github.com/ledger/ledger/pull/237) that addresses this issue.
I have successfully compiled ledger on Linux and was able to run it from anywhere in the filesystem. The changes were tested on Debian 7, Debian 8, Ubuntu Precise, Ubuntu Saucy, and OS X Mavericks.
