Solved. When I upgraded my ports, somehow dvips ended up missing in
action. I reinstalled the teTeX port and voila! Everything works as it
should.

are still <%%> (I'm using LS 1.1.12). Andthis was all working prior
to my ports upgrade; so, nothing should have changed regarding my templates.
