On the trains check out a Brit rail England pass. It's only available to 
overseas visitors and allows a child to travel free with a paying adult. It's 
pretty flexible too.

Alternatively check out the various rail passes on offer as buying one of these 
will probably save you more than it costs.

If you end up buying standard tickets check out 2 singles v return.
