PRESS RELEASE

Mansell lends support to M1

Legal Manager of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre Michael Mansell has voiced
his support for the 'M1 protest against global corporatisation, greed and
exploitation of the powerless.'

Mr Mansell said, 'The push for global free trade has led to a reduction in
the amount of wealth available to the poor. Whether it be multinational
wood chipping companies, sports shoes manufacturers of the World Bank, the
motive of the corporations is to put profit above the needs of people.
Governments have become the corporate partners of these conglomerates and
fail to protect the people from the consequences.

'In Australia we have seen successive governments pandering to the free
trade philosophy and reducing financial support to the needy as a result.

'The land and resources from which these global profits are being made," Mr
Mansell said, "are being denied to the original owners, the indigenous
people. Our people are deprived of our right to own and control our own
lands and resources while governments freely invite foreign and national
companies, often subsidised, to rip the heart out of the country.'
