I’ve often thought of making a thin stock support that attaches to the
carriage as a “follower” rather than the fixed position solutions. Would
be a good bit tricky but might work better for long spindles

I too like the idea, but as I see it, If cutting a straight dowel this steady
rest will work preface,BUT, This type of steady rest will have problems on a
tapered spindles. which is mostly what I make on the legacy. I think if you
