That should not be the case. I run quite a bit of beta software and
generally treat my machine pretty badly, often when Legacy is running, and
have never had to reinstall. Have you looked into your computer maintenance,
does it need the air vents cleaning - is it overheating, have you run a RAM

Hi C. J.,
I like your address Huskies4 and your reference to Armstrong; however I do
walk most every morning, very uplifting.
Anyway, I don't think you should have to reinstall at all. Thanks for the
input. I have not had your problem with the screen resizing properly.
Kindest regards,

I have to reinstall every 10-12 times I run the program. The screen
does not resize properly, and the instructions on the Legacy help page
do not work for me to correct this problem. I'm using Windows XP.

Hi Beth,
I've used Legacy on all my previous versions of Windows and only had a

other problems were resolved when I ran the "locate and repair" option in

Dear list,
Just wondering how many Legacy users run Legacy routinely without any
problems whatsover.
Legacy has never liked my computer. I would really like to continue using
Legacy but get tired of reinstalling, deleting files etc.
If anyone is running Legacy using Windows 2000 Professional pleas
You are correct. I placed the the em dash
on the Legacy Special Character Toolbar to see if that would help. I then
opened a Notes page, clicked on the Toolbar em several times and it displayed
properly. Closed and then reopened Notes. The ems had shrunk to skinny little
hyphens (ens).
Hi CJ,
I have a "side project" with a small group of about 35 names who I would LOVE
to be able to chart out the relationships on a printout, or even better, a web
page, but since they are not all blood related or direct line related, I
cannot do it. (or at least I havent' figured out how to d

This is an en dash -
I am sure you have seen them if you read the newspaper.
I use the em dash a lot so it frustrates me that it won't stay in the
notes.

Apparently Family Tree Maker 2006 and Genbox will do this. Just
export from Legacy in Gedcom format and import into one of the other
programs. Genbox has a 30 day full/free demo also.
Otherwise there seems to be the Treedraw plugin but that is about

I believe Godfather and Godmother are standard GEDCOM tags but
Godchild isn't. Correct?
Technically Godfather/Godmother accomplish the same thing as
Godchild: "His Godfather was so and so" vs "He was a Godchild of so

Good Day Jack,
em and en dashes come from pre-computer publishing.
Each represents a dash (or hyphen) of the width of an m or n character of the

I was just looking through the event list and I do not see a
Godfather/Godmother event. Is that one you created? I don't think I have
deleted any, but if I have would mind sending me the sentence wording so I
can recreate it?
Thanks,

There are no dedicated Legacy user groups that I'm aware of, however I do know that some of the genealogy groups around this area have one or more members that use Legacy -- perhaps contacting them would help. I myself am in far north Plano, around the 121 area.

I have been trying to use the em dash (alt-0151) in my notes. Every time I
insert it and then close the notes, it has reverted to an en dash when I re-open
the notes.
Has anybody else encountered this?

Legacy User Group
Hi,
I have created an event called "Godchild" and added different wording for the cases where diff informatio is available: for example, "He/She became the godchild of [Desc] [onDate] at [Place]". This works also when the godparents are not in the family tree (ie friends of the family, i'm not in

When a child has two Godfathers, I just use a second Godfather event;
no need for a new eventname.
