Sherry, I do want to keep the [--?--] as that helps alert me to unknowns in
reports and elsewhere. I followed your suggestion and deselected "Check for
illegal characters in name fields" on the options screen. That apparently
solved

found were archived messages from Feb to June 2006. Please let me know what

I've used Legacy Deluxe 4.0 with pleasure for the last five years.
Recently I changed many of my unknown name blanks to [--?--].
I was stunned to get about 80 pages of them in the potential problems preview
with "Too many dashes in the Name field and Possible Illegal Characters in
the Name Field.
