You day your were cleaning up locations.
Did you find non-location information in the notes and use the Move
or Copy to General Notes option for tagged "locations"?
If so, it sounds as if you had some real locations tagged as well.
Getting rid of them is a much more difficult proc

Another possibility is that the places are left over from a gedcom import
that may have placed them in the notes field.
