Hi Pami,

I use abt (about) and est (estimated) quite different and I believe they mean
very different things.

If I know that someone was x years old when they married and I have the year of
marriage, then their year of birth is "abt" yyyy because they may have been
born early in the year, late in the year etc. etc. Similarly if I have
immigration or census details, I am reasonably confident of being close to the
year of birth +/- a year or two - hence "abt".

For people that I don't have a specific year and age to calculate the "abt"
date of birth, I'll use the c.25 years generation estimate and hence use "est"
yyyy. For example if my gg-grandmother was born abt 1820 and I have her
parents names then their dates of birth with be "est" 1795 until such time as I
find something that narrows it down more specifically. If my gg-grandmother is
the 5th or 10th child then her parents dates of birth might be "est" 1790 or
"est" 1785.

To me, "abt" means I have some sort of reference year / age for the calculation,
"est" means I've done a "generational estimate".

Hope that makes sense - this process works great for me as can at least see
what "generation" ancestors might belong to - particularly those with identical
names.

Oh - "c" (circa) would equate to "abt" in my approach but from memory that
wasn't a valid date prefix in Legacy (and some other genie programs) - I could
be wrong on that or it may have changed, but I've stuck to "abt" for those type
of dates.

Regards ............... Susie Z

Myrna...
But... isn't "est." the same as writing "abt./about", "ca./circa"??? My
preference is "abt."
Happy hunting...
