I'm amazed. You're right of course. Normally I try things out but
didn't think this would work so didn't bother.
I still wouldn't add privacy brackets around a code in order to leave
event notes out of a report sometimes and not others. I'd change the
definition to leave out the [Note
They work just fine -- I use them in all sorts of situations, both in
standard definitions and over-rides.

eg Event Name: [Date], [Desc], [inPlace].[Source][CR][Note]
Could the Note appear as [[Note]] just as easily as adding [[]] to the
text of every single note for events? so that the note doesn't appear
in reports.

Just enter your Event Notes between double square brackets - [[like
this]].
Anything you type into Legacy in double square brackets is not printed.

I too have not found a way of doing that and I suspect it is not possible ie.
the whole of the Event including the Notes is either in or out.
Knowing this to be the case, I rarely use the notes except when I am certain I
wish them to be published. My brother-in-law has a nice twist on thi
