Strictly from an editorial point of view, I really dislike seeing things in
quotes unless they are actually quotations. To my mind the old rule always
subconsciously comes in to play, "Quotation marks destroy credibility." To
demonstrate . . .

John and his wife spent the night at a motel.
or
John and his "wife" spent the night at a motel.

Sometimes the use of quotation marks is unavoidable. We tend to use them
all too frequently for emphasis in e-mails because there are few other
options. But in formal reports, I think they stick out like sore thumbs.
There should be a better option.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Quoted Given names, Middle names, Nicknames

I am using Legacy Deluxe 6.0.0.110 to produce a descendant narrative book of
6 generations.

Recently I have joined the LegacyUserGroup Mailing List, and have searched
the archives, and have read the threads of earlier this year on the above
subject. At the risk of redundancy I will share my take on the subject.

Normally Legacy uses the first given name for the narratives. But using the
"Quoted given names", and the "Report Options" of "Use Quoted Names for
Narratives...", and perhaps the "Removed Quoted Given Names..." features in
Legacy, another name can be used in the narrative.

This is fine for nicknames. But what do you do in the case where the
"familiar" name is a middle name that is not a nickname?

When I used quotes to identify a middle name as the familiar name to be used
in the narrative for one of my cousins, he protested that it made it look
like a nickname. He suggested underlining the name.

My solution (for now at least) is to use the underline to identify the
middle name used as a familiar name, and quotes for a nickname. Then in the
Report Options, select both "Used Quoted Names ..." and "Remove Quoted Names
...".

Here are three cases:
1. A Middle Name as the familiar name,
2. Nickname obviously based on a given name
3. Any other nickname

How I do it:

1. A Middle Name as the familiar name:-
- In the report I wanted (and got):
"James David Smith, son of ... "
David underlined in .PDF and printout)and "David married ... "
- So, in the Legacy Name field I put:
James «u»David«/u» "David" Smith(first David has underline codes)
But when I save it, it looks like this in Family View:
James David "David" Smith (underline or codes are not displayed)
Then when I edit it again, it looks something like this:
James David "David" Smith (but it still works)

The underline is good for descendants, especially children, for which there
is no narrative, to clearly indicate their familiar name.

2. Nickname obviously based on a given name:-
- In the report I wanted (and got):
"John William Martin, son of ..." and "Bill married ..."
- So, in the Legacy Name field I put:
    John William "Bill" Martin

3. Any other nickname ("AJ" in this example"):-
- In the report I wanted (and got):
"Allan James "AJ" Martin, son of ..." and "AJ married ..."
- So, in the Legacy Name field I put:
    Allan James "AJ" "AJ" Martin

The Report module appears to be using and removing only one (the first?) of
the quoted names, and leaving the other one in place.

This solution appears to be working for me. It doesn't look all that good in
Legacy (which is what I see), but it gives what I want in the Descendant
Narrative book for everyone else in the family to see.

To underline:-
In Legacy Deluxe: select the word then press "CTRL" and "U".
In Legacy:-
        - to get « press Alt and type 0171 on the numeric key pad
        - to get » press Alt and type 0187 on the numeric key pad.

Perhaps it would be good to add an option to Legacy reports to "Use
Underlined Names for Narratives".
