On p. 600 of my version of EE, ESM deals with illegible text by showing
a footnote where the last digit of a year is rendered with an underline
character followed by [illegible]. So,
... enlisted 181_ [illegible].
I'm transcribing dozens of deeds for my Barton ancestor where a few to
many words
I would simply enclose the missing information in square brackets and
question mark:
... enlisted 181[?]
or if you think you know what the illegible date is, but are not positive:
... enlisted 18[13?]
I don't think it needs to be followed with explanation. Laurel
