Because the OP had saved pictures in bitmap format originally, so Legacy
knew the files as xxx.bmp.

Correct - what I meant by "essentially the same as renaming" is that
the file now has a new name and Legacy can't find it on its own. The
file is linked as sherry.bmp and you have to tell it that it's now
sherry.jpg.
If a file has just been moved, Legacy knows the file name and can look

I think that's very misleading.
If you have a file which Legacy knows as sherry.bmp you can rename it
sherry.jpg and tell Legacy to look for that i
