Which is one of the reasons the default option for an import is to import
into a new Family File. Then you can review the file to make sure the data
is valid and in good order before you import it into your own data file.

Have the fellow researcher send you a GEDCOM file of his data. Then you
can import that into Legacy.
If he has Legacy 8, then it would be better if he could send you a Legacy
file with the people you have in common - no import, you just do a merge of
the two databases.
