I'm also a Linux user and tried this out for you and have Legacy 8
standard version working fine on my pc. I'm running Linux Mint 17.1 and
I installed Legacy 8 into Play On Linux ( it's a front end for WINE that
is easy to use) and it's using WINE 1.6.2. After installing it there you
Legacy requires low-level IE functions to run, esp the Legacy Home tab.
That's why it worked after you installed IE.

You need to use windows to get all the features of Legacy without
constantly stumbling into problems that are caused by trying to workaround
Windows.
Trust me, you will waste (way too much) time over the years trying to run
it on another OS.
