FOR SALE: iomega Mac Companion USB/FW800 hard disk drive enclosure (NEW)
PRICE: $15 (shipping included)

THE PITCH:
This is a perfectly functional and attractive brand new HDD enclosure. I am
using one with my 2010 Intel Mac Mini. It is going cheap because of a few,
shall we say, unusual features described below. Please READ all of the
following before purchase.

CONDITION:
NEW in original packaging

CAPACITY:
Accommodates a SATA 3.5” HDD of up to 3TB

PORTS:
—2 FireWire 800 (allows for daisy chain)
—2 USB 2.0
—1 USB-B 2.0 (for use as USB hub)
—1 USB charging port (2.1 amps for charging mobile devices)
—Slot for Kensington security cable lock.

CABLES INCLUDED:
—FireWire 800
—FireWire 800-to-400
—USB (A-B)
—power cable

LED LIGHTS:
indicate remaining drive capacity (but see Unusual Feature No. 4 below)

FORM FACTOR:
Dimensions 7.75” x 5.82” (at widest point) x 1.75”. It is trapezoidal in shape,
designed to sit on the “foot” of an iMac G5 or later. With cables plugged in,
though, it sticks out slightly from the iMac’s foot.

Of course, it can be used with computers other than iMac. In fact, the front
side matches that of the Intel Mac Mini, the computer with which I am using one
of these.

AESTHETICS:
Nice streamlined aluminum case with black plastic top panel.

UNUSUAL FEATURES:
1. There are no assembly instructions in the box. There are very good
illustrated instructions posted online by Jerry Seeger here:
<https://muddledramblings.com/rumblings-from-the-secret-labs/assembling-an-iomega-mac-companion-enclosure/>
The box does contain a user manual for properly connecting the drive to the
computer.

2. As explained in the user manual, you can connect to the computer either by
FireWire OR by USB, but not both at the same time. Also, the USB charging port
is fast when the drive is connected by FireWire to the computer, but much
slower when connected by USB.

3. There are no screws in the box for mounting the HDD or keeping the two
halves of the drive carrier together. However, standard HDD mounting screws
will fit. I used two small pieces of electrical tape to keep the two halves of
the carrier together. If you are going to be leaving it in one place, you
probably don’t need to be concerned about any of this. The drive snaps into the
connector and stays put.

4. The LED drive capacity indicator lights only work if you download some
software which does not seem to be available. Lenovo (which bought the drives
division of iomega from EMC) seems to have discontinued support for legacy
iomega products. Nothing on the EMC website either, and my Internet search
turned up zilch.

5. You shut it off by unplugging it. There is no on-off switch.

BACKGROUND:
Iomega originally sold these with a 2TB or 3TB drive inside. Then EMC (which
had bought iomega) decided to stop selling the drives and just sold the
enclosures cheaply. They did not bother to add instructions or screws for
installing a drive, though the packaging indicates an empty enclosure and it
ships in parts ready to assemble.
